What do you love the most about creating art in New Orleans? What particular part of your immediate environment, in your neighborhood specifically influences your work?
I live in a countryside setting. I am surrounded by wildlife and solitude. I feel a sense of freedom and space in this environment. It’s close enough to New Orleans to still feel connected to the city and friends.
Describe your creative process. Are there any rituals or rites of passage you exercise before you begin a new piece?
I drink a lot of tea in the studio. Now that I am a mother, I create art in spurts. It helps to work with water-based, non-toxic materials that are easy to put down at a moments notice. I am in a flow state when I make marks. I then step back and reflect on what images and stories are emerging from the surface.
Where do you draw inspiration?
the Mighty Mississippi, street photography, old master painters, wildlife, occult art.
Who are your artistic influences or gurus?
Rembrandt, Willem de Kooning, Ana Mendieta, Leonora Carrington . I respect artists with mental health issues. I am awed by artists who tap into a force larger than themselves yet still create artwork true to themselves.
In New Orleans, art and music go hand in hand. What type of music, band or song lyric best describes your work?
I have a wide range of musical loves from dream pop to punk rock.
