As an aspiring jazz drummer I first moved to New Orleans as a young pup way back in the day. Life had other plans for me however and I moved to LA where I had a long career in the garment industry. You could say I got my art training by osmosis at the 9th St school of fashion. Over the decades I worked with too many extremely talented designers and merchandisers to count. I spent thousands of hours in lavishly appointed showrooms. I had the amazing fortune of being in partnership with two of the most talented designers to ever walk the mean streets of LA, manufacturing under the labels Vertigo and then Mid 60's. I spent many years hustling textiles both as a mill rep and Jobber. Finally, I was a buyer for a 37 store chain which refined my eye to a razor point. In the garment industry, a mistake is almost always costly and painful so if your eye and taste aren't on point you're going to wash out quickly. Well, life goes on and thankfully I found my way back to New Orleans and a second act as an artist.
Questions & Answers
Describe your art in three words.
Accidents of intention
Describe yourself in one word.
Yes
What do you love the most about creating art in your community? What particular part of your immediate environment, in your neighborhood specifically influences your work?
I just love being here so that alone is the inspiration. Being somewhere that doesn't resonate to your vibe is a real creative downer.
Describe your creative process. Are there any rituals or rites of passage you exercise before you begin a new piece?
Sometimes I make a riddle and then solve it. Sometimes I make a mistake and correct it. But mostly I use the Law of Attraction. I resonate with the highest emotion/vibration I can and then suck the idea out of the vortex.
Where do you draw inspiration?
Everywhere.
Who are your artistic influences or gurus?
Editing out the musical, intellectual and spiritual influences here's a short list of visual artists:
Karl Lagerfeld for his staggering output. Jay Defeo for having the most poignant inspirational story in art history. De Kooning for his commitment. Lee Bontecou, the most underrated genius. Duchamp for his F You spirit. Dali...still the GOAT. Read his treatise '50 laws for magic craftsmanship.'
Where can we find you when you are not creating art?
Well if you're up and out at 6:30 am you might find me meditating at City Park amongst the ancient oaks.
What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year?
Morning
What is something people don’t know about you? A fun fact.
