My name is Kewon Hunter and I am a self taught photographer/artist born and raised in Mississippi. I am heavily influenced by the culture I was birthed into which plays an intricate part in my work. Through my learnings combined with experience which makes up my skillset I have been able to form kinship with many different communities. My work is an ever-evolving form of self expressions.
Questions & Answers
Describe your art in three words.
vivid, live, soulful
Describe yourself in one word.
ever-changing
What do you love the most about creating art in your community? What particular part of your immediate environment, in your neighborhood specifically influences your work?
Being black and feeling safe enough to document black people just living. The people who make the community what it is. Getting to freely document black people in a country with a long contorted history against us. It is such a privilege and honor to do so.
Describe your creative process. Are there any rituals or rites of passage you exercise before you begin a new piece?
I have conversations with myself and my ancestors and let the sounds of jazz engulf my ears through my headphones. Jazz soothes me through my anxieties and allows me to feel safe and relax before creating.
Where do you draw inspiration?
Especially music, plant medicine, plant therapy, meditation, and exploring different communities.
Who are your artistic influences?
Ruddy Roye, Gordon Parks, Eric Waters, Miles Davis, Matthew Halsall, Carrie Mae Weems, Young Jeezy, Outkast, and James Van Der Zee.
In New Orleans, art and music go hand in hand. What type of music, band or song lyric best describes your work?
Jazz music most definitely influences my work, the chants from the Black Masking Indians, so does bounce music, Da Truth Brass Band, and Big Six Brass Band. If you have experienced any of these things you know what I mean.
Where can we find you when you are not creating art?
Focusing on my wellness.
What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year?
My favorite time of the day is sunrise/sunset. My favorite day of the week is Sunday. My favorite month of the year is December.
