My name is Matt Litchliter and I’m a local artist in St. Tammany Parish. I live with my beautiful wife and our two baby girls in Slidell, LA. I’ve been an artist for my entire life and graduated from SLU in 2005 with a B.A. in Fine Art and a concentration in Graphic Design. I currently work as Creative Director for eMerge where I work on various things such as print & web design.
My painting style varies from time to time but I found most of my success through my New Orleans jazz musicians series. After Katrina, I started the series as a way of coping to hopefully raise morale for my beloved city. My work has shown in New Orleans and Slidell in various galleries and shows.
I work mostly in acrylic and mixed media. Currently, I paint local subjects in the New Orleans & Louisiana area but am moving towards a more abstract look and feel in terms of design and subject. I’m very fortunate for the career I have now and look forward to a long art career in the future.
Questions & Answers
Describe your art in three words. Bright & vaguely ominous.
Describe yourself in one word.
Blessed.
Describe your creative process. Are there any rituals or rites of passage you exercise before you begin a new piece?
I will get a vision of a piece, or a concept I like and then from there I sketch until it is in enough of a place to start painting it. From there I usually work with something on in the background, from an old horror movie, an Office rerun or music. When the piece is finished I will smoke a cigar to commemorate the occasion.
Where do you draw inspiration?
I get inspiration from nature, behaviors & from certain symbolism. It usually comes suddenly, like a flood, and at usually unexpected times.
Who are your artistic influences or gurus?
The first gallery show I ever attended when I was a kid was of New Orleans artist George Dunbar. It forever cemented my love & devotion to the craft. Other artistic influences for either their work or way in which they work are Vincent Van Gogh, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Drew Struzan, Saul Bass & Stanley Kubrick to name a few.
In New Orleans, art and music go hand in hand. What type of music, band or song lyric best describes your work? "How strange it is to be anything at all." - Neutral Milk Hotel
Where can we find you when you are not creating art?
I'm either hanging out at the house having a tea party with my girls or watching movies with my wife. I spend time with my friends when I can but, aside from being a husband & father & working at my day job as Creative Director & graphic designer, I am at home working away at my art.
What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year?
My favorite time of year is Fall and most importantly October. Aside from the beautiful weather I love the colors and look of the season. I also am a huge horror fan so there is that too.
What is something people don’t know about you? A fun fact.
I am a huge movie fan and know an inordinate amount of movie trivia. I guess that's fun.
