I started my creative career drawing on my parent's furniture. From that point on I took a ridiculous amount of workshops and received a BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design. In college, I focused on metalsmithing and discovered enamel. It was the perfect mesh of the two mediums I had fallen in love with. It opened up another world of techniques for me. In my current paintings, I'm using the materials much as I would with traditional enameling-layer upon layer. Each layer is interacting differently and sometimes unexpectedly with the one below it, creating a piece that varies wildly from my beginning expectations. Each paint stroke, a layer of resin, is as much an act of emotion as one of logic. These pieces give a little bit of insight into the artist to each person who views it.
Questions & Answers
Describe your art in three words. Vibrant, rhythmic, organic
What do you love the most about creating art in New Orleans? What particular part of your immediate environment, in your neighborhood specifically influences your work? To me, New Orleans is a city that breaths life, it's home, it gets into your being
Describe your creative process. Are there any rituals or rites of passage you exercise before you begin a new piece? My studio has exploded by the time I finish a piece-bits of fabric, beads rolling on the floor, chunks of dried resin. So I always spend a day or two putting everything back in its place to clear my head for the next piece.
Who are your artistic influences or gurus? Contemporary jewelry artists- My background is in metalsmithing and it's still the first place I look when I need to jump-start an idea.
Where can we find you when you are not creating art? In a junk shop or dumpster diving. I have a habit of bringing home broken things and taking them apart for other projects. I have this amazing 1920's huge puffy lampshade that I made into my dining room chandelier using bits and pieces I've collected over the years.
What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year? The first sip of coffee on early on a cool, crisp morning.
What is something people don’t know about you? A fun fact. Cheetos and mustard is my favorite guilty pleasure snack!
