Hello!

I am Sara Hardin, I am a New Orleans-based visual artist and art educator. I create paintings and woodcut prints that explore the connection between place and memory. My inspiration comes from both personal and collective recollections. I bring awareness of the space and the unique intricacies of the human experience; the ticks, the quirks, and the machinations of everyday life. My work plays with the unique characteristics and culture of New Orleans, my hometown. My work is a cacophony of recollection, color, expressive brush strokes, and the enigmatic nature of our lived experiences. 

I graduated from the University of Louisiana in 2016 with my B.A.  in Arts Education. From there,  I began teaching visual arts at the secondary level. From 2019 to 2020, I took part in several group exhibitions and was a member of the Basin Arts Artist Collective in Lafayette, Louisiana. In 2021, I was awarded a fully-funded artist residency in VanCleave, Mississippi. I am currently pursuing my Master’s in Fine Arts, with a concentration in painting, at the University of New Orleans. Simultaneously, I continue to work as an Art Educator in the Greater New Orleans Area, where my students remain a tremendous source of inspiration and motivation in my personal studio practice.

What do you love the most about creating art in your community? What particular part of your immediate environment, in your neighborhood specifically influences your work?

I love getting to know my community on a more intimate level. My work is all about exploring my own environment, I observe the architectural  elements in the different neighborhoods of New Orleans. I find there is a special beauty in the architectural structures of this city. 

Describe your creative process. Are there any rituals or rites of passage you exercise before you begin a new piece?

I start most of my works by observing my surroundings, I photograph things I find beautiful: old buildings, plants, light 

Where do you draw inspiration?

I draw inspiration from my environment and the architecture around me.  

Who are your artistic influences or gurus?

David Hockney, Peter Doig, and Hilary Pecis

In New Orleans, art and music go hand in hand. What type of music, band or song lyric best describes your work?

I think my work goes hand and hand with ethereal music like Lofi beats or calming instrumentals. 

Where can we find you when you are not creating art?

You can find me at any hole in the wall restaurant and at city park

What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year?

My favorite season is fall and my favorite time of day is the morning.  

What is something people don’t know about you? A fun fact.

I am a horrible singer, but I sing all the time.
