I'm a New Orleans–based artist, and I start each of my vibrant hand-cut collages the same way: I observe. I watch closely, listen intently, and let the piece lead me where it needs to go. Sometimes that journey takes me to a place of whimsy and awe-inspiring beauty. Other times, it brings me into contact with more difficult emotions. Often, it's both.
This way of working makes sense to me — observation has been at the heart of every chapter of my life. I began as a cultural anthropologist and photojournalist, then moved into life coaching and intuitive healing. Across all of these roles, deep listening and careful attention have always been my starting points.
I think of my collages — and the act of creating them — as a place to “put the emotions.” Each piece is a blend of found images from old books or magazines and lyrics from the musical artists who move me most. The results are often inspirational, sometimes unexpected, and always open to interpretation. My hope is that anyone who sees my work feels something uniquely their own.
Questions & Answers
Describe your art in three words.
Whimsical. Intuitive. Lyrical.
Describe yourself in one word.
Curious
Describe your creative process. Are there any rituals or rites of passage you exercise before you begin a new piece?
I refer to my art practice as "following the wonder." It reflects my spiritual practice of listening to the subtle guidance of the universe—like following breadcrumbs left on the path and trusting they'll lead somewhere meaningful.
Where do you draw inspiration?
Art is my way to explore, feel, and sort through my emotions and experiences––especially those that don't make sense to me—and my process for creating it is organic and intuitive.
It starts with a found image, often from a book or magazine, and I combine other found images or my own photography to create layered works that reflect the complexities of life. Occasionally, I begin with a clear direction in my mind, but more often the composition reveals itself to me.
Since childhood, song lyrics have been a way for me to connect with and narrate emotions, and they remain a central influence in my art. While creating a composition, I invite a song to find me: I hit shuffle on a playlist and lose myself in the work. Before long, a lyric catches my ear, perfectly capturing the event I'm trying to articulate. From there, the song begins to shape the mood and guide the composition.
The objects in my collages are chosen with intention. Each one is emotional and evocative on its own, using visual language to express what’s hard to put in words. But when placed together, the seemingly unrelated objects find new rhythm and meaning.
Where can we find you when you are not creating art?
When I'm not in my Bywater home studio collaging or coaching, you'll find me exploring the bayous in my little boat, riding my bike, or taking in live local music.
What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year?
Carnival season, of course! The whole city comes alive with creativity, and everyone becomes an artist in their own way. I especially love the renegade pop-up parades—you never know when or where one will appear, and that spontaneity is magic. Then, come August, I like to escape the heat and visit someplace that has a real winter—like Sweden—where people actually celebrate summer instead of just surviving it like we do down here. It helps me reset.
