Making Lemonade

Making Lemonade - I'm an adoptee, and found my biological family several years back. My aunt gave me a blue willow china plate that had belonged to my biological great grandmother. I had all kinds of ideas of paintings I wanted to do with the blue willow plate, and got started making a series of reference photos. All I had that day to pair with the plate was lemons, so I took several shots and called it a day. Soon after, the plate got broken due to its display shelf not being as stable as we believed it to be and shifting as someone walked over nearby floorboards. I was crushed as it was one of the only things I had from my family at that time. Later I realized it was fitting (and maybe a bit wryly funny) that I got the shots of lemons and have since painted from those reference photos several times. It was a personal reminder to not hold on too tightly and try my best to make the best out of situations that might be less than ideal.

I grew up in Natchitoches, Louisiana and am now based out of Shreveport. I'm a lifelong painter. Some of my earliest memories involve being covered head to toe in paint. Every margin of every notebook was filled with doodles in school. I settled on a career as a massage therapist, but the Covid shutdown allowed me to pursue art full time and I haven't looked back. My brain is always 4 or 5 paintings ahead of me. I have had so many exciting opportunities as an artist in Louisiana, and I can't wait to see what's around the next bend in the art road!
