This painting was created during some of the darkest, most hateful times during the pandemic shutdown. The painting started with some rain and ink for the red background. I began the painting horizontally and worked on the landscape. Eventually I began working on it vertically and a woman appeared in the ink wash. Her pose and surroundings reminded me of the painting, “Birth of Venus” by Sandro Botticelli. Venus is the Roman goddess of love, beauty, desire, prosperity and victory. I feel during those dark times we needed the power of Venus in the world. She is also pregnant and perhaps she’s carrying the next goddess for these contemporary darker times. She sits in an oyster shell and surrounded by a beautiful lush swamp like landscape that almost seems like it was shot with infrared film. May we spring forward with Love for ourselves, our fellow humans and the planet!

Follow this artistI grew up in the New Orleans area and was involved with art most of my life. I was in the talented art program beginning in first grade and eventually attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts as well as the University of New Orleans. Katrina interrupted my college education, but it educated me on so much more in life. My work is influenced by the magical realness of my life in New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana. I have exhibited all over Louisiana, NYC, and Oakland. I'm currently getting my MFA in Studio Art at UNO.
