Lush courtyards, vibrant colors and lively scenes are just a few ways New Orleans plays a role in my work.
Hi, I'm Kristy (Oustalet) Duke– a color obsessed painter living and working in New Orleans.
Questions & Answers
It wasn’t until I moved out of state and worked abroad that I began to truly come to appreciate my hometown.
These days, the people, places and the happenings of New Orleans are my muse inside my home art studio.
Describe your art in three words.
Colorful, Monochromatic, Spirited scenes of New Orleans
Describe your creative process. Are there any rituals or rites of passage you exercise before you begin a new piece?
My signature style stems from a Printmaking process I got into years ago called: a Monotype.
Traditionally, a Monotype begins with a layer of ink rolled onto a printmaking slab and the ink is “lifted” away to create a painterly image that can only be printed once.
I use this same concept as a base for my original oil paintings. I take a painted canvas and remove the paint with brushes to reveal the highlights then go back in with the darks to get a painting with a full value range.
Where do you draw inspiration?
In my work I explore themes of communal experiences, as well as places that exude the vibrancy of New Orleans.
Where can we find you when you are not creating art?
I love to try new restaurants and I spend a lot of my free time roaming City Park with my family.
What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year?
Springtime in New Orleans is the best time of year! It's filled with happenings, festivals, and crawfish boils.
