I began my study and production of art at a young age in New York, first through Illustration, then painting. I have gleaned inspiration from the many places I have lived throughout America and outside of it which include: Italy, France, Germany, Indonesia, Spain, The Caribbean, The Czech Republic, and The Netherlands.
My style primarily focuses on free-form movement, broken geometry, out-of-sync moments, multiple focal points, illusory lines, overlapping contrasts, subjective identity, decay, color field washes, and layered compositions. I currently produce and sell my art in California, Texas, New Orleans and New York. Please visit Davidcarllang.com for my archived work.
Questions & Answers
Describe your art in three words.
Spontaneous, cerebral, textured
Describe yourself in one word.
Persistent.
What do you love the most about creating art in your community? What particular part of your immediate environment, in your neighborhood specifically influences your work?
Art contributes to aesthetics and aesthetics elevates the quality of living. Being part of a group that shares a belief in the importance of this is essential to my life. The abstract painting starts with the artist and finishes in the viewer’s mind. Art is the effect of transmission of experience, thusly, sometimes to make sense of things we cannot understand we turn to art. It is my hope to speak to the subconscious and subliminal sensibilities of my audience and community that produces a change for the better.
Describe your creative process. Are there any rituals or rites of passage you exercise before you begin a new piece?
Depends, sometimes I start with a loose idea but, most of the time I tap into the subconscious and practice a style of free form. My work usually consists of many layers which occur over many days. I usually build up a color profile and textural composition and then deconstruct it.
Everyday we wander through life not realizing the capacity of our brain’s ability to record and store the information around us. Because most of the information is too much to process it is stored in the subconscious. This information is accessed purposely at times and spontaneously at other times. So many things affect us in ways we do not understand because of the mysterious way in which the depth of the brain works. This is where abstraction, specifically abstract art, comes into play. Great art speaks to those deeper, unrecognized parts of us. We see a piece of art that might seem weird, different or even unpleasant yet, somehow it captures us. We walk away and it still sticks with us. So much of this strange power lies in how abstraction interacts and engages the subconscious. This is also how tremendous works of art speak to the collective conscious. It is this mysterious language that I choose to communicate with and through. Every single painting I have finished has abstractly revealed what I was going through at the time. It never ceases to please me when others tell me what it was without any prior knowledge. Through abstract art I can communicate the things that are hidden.
