Catherine Walker is a multidisciplinary feminist artist using the languages of painting, textile, and installation to deconstruct gendered, psycho-social mechanisms of control. Walker employs familial evangelical histories and memory as a lens for interrogating ideologies, hierarchies, and binary gender performativity. As an educator, Catherine has worked with young artists in New York City, Washington, DC, Chicago, and New Orleans public schools and co-founded an art education program called Sketch Basin in New Orleans. Catherine holds a Master of Arts from NYU Steinhardt, Department of Art and Art Professions and a Master of Fine Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been shown in New York, Chicago, Washington, DC, Houston, and New Orleans.
Questions & Answers
Describe your art in three words.
Fluid, Bold, Emotional.
Describe yourself in one word.
Contemplative.
Where do you draw inspiration?
My paintings start with a thin acrylic wash on unprimed canvas, followed by a charcoal line drawing, loosely based on the folds and volume of a couture gown. These forms of fashion captivate me in the way they explode into space and simultaneously seem to swallow their ultra feminized substrate. They hold a tension between freedom and constriction. The drawing operates as a visual map of boundaries to be both observed and violated.
Where can we find you when you are not creating art?
As a mother of two children, you'll most likely find me chasing after them for all the usual reasons. They keep me very busy and I love spending time with them and watching them grow into themselves as individuals. You can also find me at museums, watching my neighborhood go by on our front porch, reading, or traveling with friends and family.
What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year?
Other than Mardi Gras season, I think March and April in New Orleans is a special slice of magic; a little piece of heaven. There is so much vibrant color and the scent of Jasmine vines and Gardenia flowers follow you everywhere.
