"Chasing tha Blues" Homage to Little Freddie King

"Chasing tha Blues" Little Freddie King's life has always been hard. Hell, not long ago he was blown out of New Orleans by Katrina and he went missing for a time. It's always been this tough and it always will be. "Chasing Tha Blues" takes you on a rough ride through Freddie's life. Little Freddie King (born Fred Eugene Martin, July 19, 1940 in McComb, Mississippi) is an American Delta blues guitarist. His style is based on that of Freddie King, although his own approach to country blues is original. The cousin of Lightnin' Hopkins, King learned guitar from his father. In 1954, at the age of 14, he moved to New Orleans. He performed in many juke joints with his friends Babe Stovall, Slim Harpo, and Champion Jack Dupree, playing both acoustic and electric guitar. He recorded the first electric blues album in New Orleans with Harmonica Williams in 1969. In 1976, King went on a European tour alongside Bo Diddley and John Lee Hooker. His next recording opportunity came in 1996, twenty-seven years after his first, with the release of Swamp Boogie. King's Sing Sang Sung (2000) was recorded live at the Dream Palace in Faubourg Marigny. King is a charter member of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and has played at the festival for 42 years. He is a member of the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. He was selected three times as Blues Performer of the Year in New Orleans. King was honored with a Mississippi Blues Trail marker in McComb, Mississippi. His 2012 album Chasing tha Blues won Best Blues Album at the 12th Annual Independent Music Awards.

I call my art "Composing with Color". Everyone hears music differently. The way we perceive art is shaped by our taste and by emotions, situations, and personalities. My canvas is the manuscript on which the notes are painted. I have attempted to have music take on physical colors as it travels through air. My ideal vision would be to create a world in colors as Thelonious Monk created a world of sound.

I am a graduate of The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA. I have had solo exhibitions in New Orleans, Los Angeles, Miami and Frankfurt, Germany. I have received a grant from the prestigious Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the Artist Fellowship Inc, New York, NY.

George McClements is a New Orleans artist living and working in the Bywater neighborhood.
