A portrait of Karen Gadbois commissioned by Nola Media Group, producers of Nola.com / The Times-Picayune as part of its tricentennial project, 300 for 300: People who make New Orleans, New Orleans. The legacy: Karen Gadbois was "just" a blogger during those dark days after 2005's Hurricane Katrina hit, working from the kitchen table in her ruined Carrollton home and venting her outrage on a site she called Squandered Heritage. But she was a determined one; public officials who underestimated her did so at their own peril. Her digging, dismissed by some as "amateur investigations," ended up uncovering widespread misuse of federal recovery money by local public agencies and -- working with TV reporter Lee Zurick -- led to such coveted journalism honors as a Peabody Award and an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award. It would also set her on a new and unexpected career path as a founder of the local nonprofit investigative newsroom The Lens -- and prove once more the indispensable value of solid watchdog journalism. | Read full story |

I was born and raised in New Orleans with 35 years as a commercial graphic artist working for corporate companies throughout the New Orleans area. I received a Commercial Art degree from Delgado Community College. I've also studied at the University of Southeastern Louisiana and various artist workshops throughout Louisiana.

The subjects I choose to paint are usually subjects that remind me of my southern roots. The music, the people, the food, the cultures, etc. All that is New Orleans and its roots. I have what you might call an impressionistic style. I call it contemporary folk art with quick wide brush strokes and flashes of color, highlighted with gold leaf and raised texture. I am always trying to bring across my love for the southern area and it's people to my paintings.

Connie Kittok is a New Orleans artist living and working in the Uptown neighborhood.
